NDI Methods for Composite and Bonded Structures

This re-designed course is instructed in a partnership arrangement between Advanced Composites Training and Dassault FalconJet.

Proficiency of NDT personnel is critical and every effort must be made toward continuous improvement in the understanding of aircraft composite structures. This program is presented by highly qualified Level III  and composites engineering instructors.

This course provides current information on various NDI methods as well as composites specific airframe materials.  Familiarization with newer technologies and applications such as UT phased array and shearography techniques.

Topics covered in this 5-day course include

  • Review of UT principles as applied to composites and bonded structures in a seminar and hands-on environment
  • Insight into the current state of the art equipment and techniques in UT, Thermography and Shearography
  • Participation in the fabrication of flaw detection reference standards using advanced composite materials of carbon and glass fibers.
  • Introduction to the theory, principles, techniques and applications of NDT methods for composite structures focusing on in-service aircraft issues. Case studies of actual aircraft structural failures resulting from human errors in detecting flaws will be examined.
  • Inspection of  numerous actual aircraft structures and components, including B-737, B-747, Fairchild Metro, Falcon 20, DC-9, MD-80, Bell helicopters, Airbus A300 components and others.

Prerequisites: Registration is open to anyone, please note this is an advanced program intended primarily for persons who are currently CGSB/ASNT Level II or III certified or equivalent.

Partial Attendance: Mechanics, maintenance management, engineers, etc. may choose to attend only the Composites Awareness portion of the course, the first 2½ days

Certification: FAA – Federal Aviation Administration acceptable towards Inspection Authorization IA Renewal Training.  IA renewal Credit will be available for first 2½ days of Composites Awareness or the full 5 day NDI course.

*This course is instructed at the facilities of AANC Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M.
