NDI Methods for Composite and Bonded Structures

This course has been designed to comply with the Recommended Practice No.  SNT-TC-1A  2001 of The American Society for Nondestructive Testing Inc.

This course provides an overview on “state-of-the-art” non-destructive inspection methods & technologies, for the detection and evaluation of flaws in composite and bonded structures.

The operation of conventional ultrasonics, air-coupled ultrasonics, mechanical impedance tests, laser shearography, infrared thermography, radiography, their applications and limitations in the inspection of composite materials will be examined. Techniques for the fabrication of composite reference standards and the correct / incorrect methods for their design will be demonstrated.

Topics covered in this 5-day course include

  • composite materials in modern aircraft structures, current applications of composites, fiber metal laminates, carbon fiber, aramid, boron, glass, spectra and hybrid fabrics
  • materials & processes ( M & P ) specific to the manufacture of REFERENCE STANDARDS
  • basic laminate design, the essential theory behind the design of a fiber laminate structure
  • health and safety considerations for technicians engaged in composite structures NDI
  • damage assessment, Ultrasonics, Laser Shearography, Thermography and Radiographic inspection techniques.

Prerequisites: Trainees should have prior experience and training in NDI technologies ( equivalent to CGSB Level I ).

Certification:

FAA – Federal Aviation Administration acceptable towards Inspection Authorization IA Renewal Training
