I hear it all the time…. “All-composites aircraft, yup I guess that’s the way of the future”.
WAKE UP my fellow aircraft maintenance and repair professionals! The FUTURE arrived more than thirty years ago. In just a two years from now the Boeing 787 DreamLiner will enter commercial service. The entire primary wing, fuselage and tail structures are made of carbon fibre monolithic and sandwich laminates and other Advanced Composites materials.
The new Airbus A380 is now completing the test flight program and will be in service in a year from now. Take a close look at the upper fuselage section… that’s not sheet aluminum, it’s GLARE ( GLAss REinforced aluminum )! Otherwise know as a Fibre-Metal Laminate. The new Airbus A-350 now in the design phase will also, like the B-787, be constructed from a majority of carbon fibre laminates.
It’s not just the big airliners that are switching to near-total use of composites in their primary structures. From Homebuilt sport aircraft to the most advanced corporate jets, composites rule the day. With each new aircraft type that is produced, there are quantum leaps in the sophistication of composites applications and the need for efficient repair methods.
Yes… we are witnessing a “Renaissance” in aircraft design, materials and manufacturing.
